Helping you understand giving from scripture?
God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Corinthians 9:7
Cheerful giving that proceeds from a heart that loves to do the will of the Lord in spirit and in truth is applauded, while a gift that is given grudgingly comes from a heart that has misunderstood the true purpose of giving and which sadly misses the blessings that stream into the life of a faithful and true disciple of the Lord. Let us give of our time as well as our money – let us offer our love to the Lord as well as our finances. The Bible says, “Honor the Lord by giving him the first part of all your income” (Proverbs 3:9 TLB).
So what kind of giving is worship? “On every Lord’s Day each of you should put aside something from what you have earned during the week, and use it for this offering. The amount depends on how much the Lord has helped you earn” (1 Corinthians 16:2 TLB). Worship giving is undesignated. That means you don’t control it, you don’t direct it, you don’t tell God what to do with it. Worship giving is given when and where you worship. You give the first part of your money on the first day of the week and say, “God, you’re first in my life.” Worship giving is planned. You don’t just give spontaneously. You think it through. Worship giving is proportional. If you didn’t earn anything this week, you don’t give anything. If you earn a little, you give a little. The most sensitive nerve in the body is the one that goes from the heart to the wallet.
Consider: In the Old Testament, sacrifices to the Lord were designated as “gifts” (Numbers 18:11; cf. Hebrews 5:1). When the wise men from the east worshipped the baby Jesus, their devotion was manifested in the form of “gifts” (Matthew 2:11). It is generally conceded that the “fellowship” mentioned in Acts 2:42 (in concert with other items of worship) embraces the act of “giving” (cf. Romans 15:26; 2 Corinthians 9:13). When the Philippian saints gave their money for the support of Paul, God viewed it as “an odor of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, well-pleasing to God” (Philippians 4:18).
An inspired writer admonished: “But to do good and to communicate [be generous] forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased” (Hebrews 13:16). In view of the foregoing passages, it necessarily would follow that if the New Testament places upon the Christian the obligation to “give” of his means unto God, and when he neglects that responsibility, he has refused to worship his Maker, at least in that respect.
